Kaleb’s Journey #KalebsFaith
On Saturday, June 11, 2011, almost a month after his 4th birthday, Kaleb was taken to the doctor after complaining of leg pains accompanied by a temperature that would come and go. On the morning of this visit, Kaleb was in his normal happy mood and had planned the activities of the day as well as the meals he wanted after his doctor’s visit. The doctor initially diagnosed Kaleb with a viral infection but decided to do blood work to be sure.
After the results were in, the doctor stated she wanted Kaleb to be taken to Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) for more testing. Adding she was still considering him to have a viral infection but because of his blood counts, she thought it could be his bone marrow (cancer). Kaleb was taken to TCH where tests were run and the diagnosis of Leukemia ALL (B cell) was confirmed. Kaleb was admitted into TCH where he remained for approximately 2 weeks undergoing treatment. This was the beginning of a journey of 3 ½ years of treatment.
By God’s grace and mercy, on September 19, 2014, Kaleb received his last dose of chemotherapy via his port and took his last dose of oral chemotherapy on September 23, 2014. Kaleb was transferred to the Long Term Survivor clinic at TCH. Kaleb remained in remission and off treatment for 6 years and 7 months and 17 days.
In March 2021, during his Lacrosse season, Kaleb began to complain of leg pain after practice. The pain would resolve after a hot Epson salt soak. On March 26, 2021, Kaleb was seen by his pediatrician and his lab work returned normal and he was referred to an orthodontist. Unfortunately, the orthopedist was not able to justify Kaleb’s pain and recommended Kaleb for an MRI.
On May 3, 2021, Kaleb began to complain of back pain. He awoke on the morning of May 6th asking to go to the doctor. We returned to his pediatrician who re-did his lab work. On the afternoon of May 7th, his pediatrician called and stated there was a significant change in his lab work. She further stated that Kaleb’s Long Term Survivor Oncologist scheduled him to return to TCH on May 10th. Kaleb was seen by his previous Oncologist on May 10th and was admitted to the hospital later that evening due to elevated Uric Acid. On May 11th (the day before his 14th birthday), after having a bone aspiration, Kaleb was diagnosed with a relapse of Leukemia ALL (B Cell). He began treatment on May 12th and on June 14th, Kaleb achieved remission. In an effort to maintain his remission, Kaleb began his 2-year journey of treatment on June 25, 2021.
Throughout this journey, Kaleb has remained positive and optimistic!! He has strong faith in GOD and is committed to winning this fight!

when it is in your power to do so." [Proverbs 3:27]
